    Fear of Flight
    By Todd Wright
This week presented a whole new challenge when seven family members and one bulldog descended upon me and filled every available foot of floor space in my home. My niece's boyfriend Jake Fricano helped by playing some fine drums on this song. It was originally recorded by my friends in a great Baltimore band called Naked Blue several years ago. Here's my version of their version of my song. 14 of 40x40.

    Come Down
    By Todd Wright
I wrote this song nearly ten years ago when some friends were thinking about getting divorced. The lyrics are not incredibly deep but I feel like there's something bigger in the simplicity. I never played it for either one of them. They are still together. 21 of 40x40.

    Simple Heart
    By Todd Wright
Enough of the serious stuff for a bit. I needed to write a simple 3 minute bubblegum pop song because it's been a while. I started writing this Monday at 3AM and finished it Monday at 3:25AM. This song has it all: hand claps, cowbell, big guitars and ridiculous background vocals...and when it comes to drum fills at 2:15 lies my Mona Lisa. This isn't higher learning, it's only simple math. 16 of 40x40.

    If It's Not Too Late
    By Todd Wright
Holy "Lean On Me" I have NO idea where this hopeful, it's-all-gonna-be-ok lyric came from. Please do not let this song's message tarnish my cold, sarcastic and abrasive demeanor. Truth be told, every week my daughter draws a picture inspired by the lyric of whatever song is being released. This week she brought home a lovely painting of a bouquet of flowers and I thought "I'm gonna write a song to go with those flowers.." 31 of 40x40.

    Wake
    By Todd Wright
This one is slow and sad. I don't think in the first 18 weeks I've many heart-wrenching-woe-is-me-for-losing-you songs yet. This is unusual because every song I wrote up until age 32 was about that and only that. 19 of 40x40.

    Orbit
    By Todd Wright
Three years ago in late October my friend and drummer Chris Williams passed away. He played with me in the Pat McGee Band and occasionally in Getaway Car. His favorite GC song was "Orbit." So this week, for him, I've finally done a proper recording of this song. I was able to piece together a performance using other sessions I had recorded him on. Chris Reardon from Getaway Car played bass, Jared Bartlett played guitar and Micah Wilshire mixed it. For CW, you are missed. 4 of 40x40.

    Unlucky Stars
    By Todd Wright
Inspired by my daughter, Unlucky Stars is about the moment when every bad idea, raw deal and big mistake I ever made suddenly became worth it. Co-produced by Jared Bartlett and mixed by the superfabulous Micah Wilshire. It marks my triumphant return to the drum kit and my beautiful daughter's first recorded vocal performance at the end of the song. 3 of 40x40.

What Am I Gonna Do Now
    By Todd Wright
More than 8300 words later and with the help of 40 plus friends and musicians 40x40 is finished. I am relieved but a little sad. A HUGE thank you goes out to everyone and, of course, every bit of love to my beautiful daughter Ryan who drew a picture to go with each song. Here's a love song I wrote to the cruel mistress that 40x40 sometimes was. 40 of 40x40!

    Coming Up For Air
    By Todd Wright
Dinner with Mark Williams and Bryan Dawley turned into dessert at Iceberry turned into a bottle of Yellowtail (for them) and a laaaaaate hang at my house to write a song for this week. There are so many nautical songs out there I figured it was time to make some oceanic references. All those smooth bands from the 70s sang about actual sailing...me not so much. I got my old Excentrics mate Dan Rebeiz to sing with me on this one. 37 of 40x40.

    Lovesick Freak (A Hostage Situation)
    By Todd Wright
My friend Justin Sheehy from the great band Jonasay came to my house one day and inspired this every day boy-loves-girl-girl-leaves-boy-boy-has-multiple-personality-disorder-and-holds-self-hostage-til-police-who-may-or-may-not-be-a-figment-of-boy's-imagination-show-up-to-talk-him-down love song. 9 of 40x40.

    Driving You Home
    By Todd Wright
This one is for the single moms, single dads and blended families out there. The great Brian Delaney from the New York Dolls is on drums. The amazing Jared Bartlett is on guitar. I played the other stuff and the always incredible Micah Wilshire mixed it. My daughter helped me with the lyrics! 2 of 40x40.

    Misdirected
    By Todd Wright
There are some bits and pieces scattered through my iTunes library called "ideas." This past Tuesday morning at 2AM when I had no song for the week I went to the search window in the upper right hand corner and typed "ideas" in and found 8 years of mumbling, disjointed, nonsensical musical babble. In those fragments I found something called "Misdirected." 28 of 40x40.

    Happy
    By Todd Wright
This seemed to be a pretty simple heart-broken message until I sang through it a few times and it started to sound stalkerish. So apply it as you will: 1. a simple sweet I'ma-gonna-miss-you-baby-when-you-leave song OR 2. I'm standing over you whilst you sleep, I'm creepy, I'm strange and maybe it's time for something of the court-ordered variety. Either way it has plenty of "bah bahs" to soften any would-be controversy. 20 of 40x40.

    45
    By Todd Wright
Do people even know what 45s are anymore? This song is a power pop tribute to vinyl records, fuzzy guitars and sha-la-las. I started it Tuesday at 6:33PM and I'm just wrapping it up Wednesday morning at 4:31 AM. Harry Evans played drums, Mark Williams played some sweet guitarmony, Scott Simons played keyboards, Micah Wilshire mixed. 18 of 40x40.

    One More To Go
    By Todd Wright
Appropriate title. 39 down and 1 to go. I wrote this about the fact that I keep discovering how wrong I was about things I was sure of...and now at 39 and 50 weeks old I may not know anything at all. Maybe when I do 80x80 I'll possess some actual wisdom but for now...at almost 40...it appears I have yet to figure it all out. 39 of 40x40.

    With You
    By Todd Wright
Luke Brindley and I wrote this song in the wee hours of Sunday night / Monday morning. We didn't start recording until Tuesday at 11PM right after I played a 4 hour gig here in town. Bryan Dawley and Luke came over to see it through to 4AM. This was probably the most fun I've had on a 40x40 song. A special shout out belongs to Scott Stapp and Chad Kroeger for keeping us awake with their brilliant ridiculousness. 36 of 40x40.

    I Was Wrong
    By Todd Wright
Women of the world take note as I am about to say something no man has ever said (or at least no man in my family). Not only am I going to say it but I am tying it to a melody, surrounding it with chords and sending it out into the ether for all to hear and quote for all of time...I. Was. Wrong. I wrote this with the great Bryan Dawley late Monday night after some Mint Chocolate Chunk ice cream and soul searching. 34 of 40x40.

    Alien Love Song
    By Todd Wright
I thought if I was going to write an obvious love song I should make it about something unique. Some time later my friend, Yvonne, was in a fight with cancer and, at her family's request, I sang this song for her. In that moment it was changed forever. With the help of friends: Matt McGinn (co-produced), Rico Allen (drums) Mark Williams (guitar) and Micah Wilshire (mixed) I have finally recorded it. This song is, always was and always will be for Yvonne Haga. 5 of 40x40.

    Anything At All
    By Todd Wright
I got several requests to record this one so here it is. It's been attempted in the studio several times but never well enough to see the light of day. It's a simple rock song about asking your ex for a temporary reconciliation (for lack of a better way to put it). When I asked my daughter to draw this week's picture she asked "what's the song about daddy?" I said "um...just draw whatever you want." 23 of 40x40.

    Better Than You
    By Todd Wright
Sunday and Monday are my "40x40" days but this week I had family obligations Sunday and Monday I had to be in Red Bank, NJ to work with a band in the studio. We wrapped Monday night at 10PM and I knew the only chance I had to get my song in this week was to jump in the car and drive the four hours back home. After digging through some old sessions I found "Better Than You." 29 of 40x40.

    It's Only Dying
    By Todd Wright
Angry pop songs are written when the AC is broken. Mark Williams played guitar and bass. Tyler DeYoung played drums. Micah Wilshire mixed. 32 of 40x40.

    Stay Over (Ryan's Lullaby)
    By Todd Wright
This is a song I wrote in my head a few days before my daughter slept over at my house the first time. I was crazy nervous and I knew she would be too. Thankfully it went pretty well and now years later (and many sleepovers) I was finally able to get the song out of my head and into the computer. Ross Lara of SECTR 24 produced and created this beautiful track from just my vocal and a piano part. 22 of 40x40.

    Down With Me
    By Todd Wright
Mama said there'd be weeks like this...When I started 40x40 I knew it was going to be difficult. I did not account for illness. This was the toughest so far. This month has been full of songs that got all emotional so here's a straight up rock song about asking a buddy to self destruct with you. Dan Garvin played drums. Chris Reardon played bass and Jared Bartlett played guitar. Micah Wilshire mixed. 6 of 40x40.

    Inside
    By Todd Wright
I had no song as of 4:30PM Tuesday. It had been one of those get-nothing-done-mope-around-the-house kind of days which are particularly unmotivating. Finally I just decided to rip into myself. This is probably the darkest I've gotten with 40x40 but hey...40 songs requires a little contrast. 35 of 40x40.
